What does it take to become a great what?? Just in general? A great person?

Well since you didn't specify.

To become great is what you make of yourself. Everyone is born no better than anyone else. YOu make yourself the person you are.

Becoming great takes time, patience, humbleness.

THERE is a Principle of Power in every person. By the intelligent use and direction of this principle, one can develop his own mental faculties. Humans have an inherent power by which he may grow in whatsoever direction he pleases, and there does not appear to be any limit to the possibilities of his growth. No one has yet become so great in any faculty but that it is possible for some one else to become greater. The possibility is in the Original Substance from which one is made.

Knowing the purpose of life. The purpose of life for humans is growth just as the purpose of life for trees and plants is growth
Trees and plants grow automatically and along fixed lines; one can grow as the will. Trees and plants can only develop certain possibilities and characteristics one can develop any power which is or has been shown by any person, anywhere. Nothing that is possible in spirit is impossible in flesh and blood. Nothing that one can think is impossible in action. Nothing that one can imagine is impossible of realization.

The essense of your life makes you great. The greater and more harmonious and well-rounded you are the greater you feel. Feeling great is essensial to being great.. Being the best you can be.

Just remember, nothing was ever in any one that is not in you no humans ever had more spiritual or mental power than you can attain, or did greater things than you can accomplish. You can become what you want to be. DETERMINATION MAKES YOU GREAT!

The quote i like is one I didn't read but heard on the film 'She's the man' which was based on Twelfth night where they say
'Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them'
So some people are just born great because they inherit greatness (king, queen) They didn't do anything to get it they just become it (of course for most people if you are born the queen you do actually still have to work hard.)

Some achieve greatness, they work really hard to get where they are buisness wise etc. Which I think is the greatess kind of way to get it because I think people respect you for it if you've worked your whole life then if you just happen to be born into it.

I don't know whether greatness being thrust onto you applies today but sometimes you are made to lead and you think you are not right for the job. But you are forced anyway and then you achieve greatness that way.

By "great" I take you to mean experiencing more than one currently experiences or perceives oneself to be. In this case, I assume that one wants to "expand" and experience beyond one's present limitations. In that regard it will be necessary to shed the limiting ego-personality, which is driven by the chaotic, incessant, manipulative chatter of the monkey-mind. How easily we are controlled by habits and patterns and mind-sets that prevent this expansion into "greatness." When the urge to expand pushes strongly enough, one will begin to observe the constraints of the conditioning that has been handed to us by "others." -- family, religion, society, etc. Without self-examination there can be no expansion into that which is greater. As the ego begins to crumble, that which is already within oneself begins to reveal Itself. At this awakening one begins to open and expand, allowing the source of life to fill this emptying being, and flow freely with Its transcendent qualities of love, compassion, union, and oneness. Only in this way is one's "greatness," which already exists, revealed. Meditation is the best means of observing the false self through the streaming of chaotic and restless mind, which so skillfully turns one away from one's true nature--expansion into oneness. To become great, you must do what you love against all odds. You must not care what other people think of you. And you have to commit one random act of kindness everyday.
