Unfortunately, I have to put this in the past tense: what made my husband the best while he was alive.
Steve was incredibly intelligent, very wise, kind, gentle, thoughtful (in some ways; and remarkably dense about feelings in others), was a terrific lover who was more concerned with my pleasure than his own, was enough smarter than me that I could trust his judgment, and yet was willing to listen to my dumbest questions with patience. He was also a good cook, and ran the vacuum cleaner once a week. He was even more my best friend than he was my husband.
Then he committed suicide, and left me here to face life alone. THAT was a dirty trick, but I have forgiven him. He was very discouraged, and just lost faith in his own future.

Any spouse, and more so men, would be valued for what they provide for family.
