To do it without a calculator - 14 is about 3/4 of the way between the square of three (9) and the square of four (16), so a good guess for the square root would be about 3.75

Ok let's take this step by step via the "reduction from first estimate" method in my book:
First estimate = 4
14/4 = 3.5
Average of 4 & 3.5 = 3.75
Reduction = 4-3.75 = 0.25
0.25 / 3.75 = 0.0666667 (1/15)
1/15 / 2 = 1/30
0.25 / 30 = 0.00833333
3.75-0.00833333 = 3.74166667
Approximate answer = 3.7417
I hope this helps, but do please feel free to drop me a line if you'd like to go over this or any aspect of figure-work further.

Approximately 3.74
Why do you ask?
Surely you have a calculator or can use Excel?
If not, try Computing for Dummies (I,m not joking!) or press the !Help" button.
