My opinion is that is simply one interpretation of one of a dozen translations of the bible and that things have to be taken in the context that they were put in. Reading the entire scripture (verses before and after) a quotation will usually tell you what the person was implying and in that case, Jesus clearly wasn't talking about masturbation but lust and desire as in the case of coveting something that doesn't belong to you.

ADULTERY means having sexual relations with someone who is married or a married person having sexual relations with someone other than their spouse. LUST means having a strong desire for someone/something. They are both sins. But is someone doing either one of these things when they are masturbating?

I don't think that most people are commiting adultery or lusting when they masturbate (although some probably are). I don't think that people actually desire the women they see in porno's when they are whackin off to it. It's simply visual stimulus. If you actually want to have sex with those freaks on the screen then you are probably a freak yourself. But most people still get excited by watching other people have sex. That's not the same thing as lust to me. Furthermore, if God, Jesus or whoever wanted to declare that masturbation itself should be a sin, then why wouldn't they just say that plain and simple? Masturbation is not mentioned once by name or description in the bible, but everything else that can be considered a sexual sin is (adultery, fornication, homosexuality, ect). Wouldn't he have said masturbation or sexual self abuse (or words to that effect) was also a sin if it was actually a sin? That means that it's not. The bible is very clear on what constitutes perversion or sin. If you have to reach and dig to find something to figure out if its a sin or not, then chances are it's not. Furthermore, God wouldn't have designed our bodies so that every 12 year old boy in the world would naturally have the instinct to masturbate, then declare it a sin. That just doesn't make since and the universe isn't designed so badly.

Bull----. You are first assuming religions are true when they are all manmade, so anything said as a relgious taboo is just a manmade rule. Secondly, masterbation is not always a result of lust for someone else; many guys masterbate all the time for their own enjoyment, and there is no "lusting" for any other person during their self-gratification. Men have masterbated since the first time they found out it was fun thousands upon thousands of years ago-- when there was no mags or porn to look at.

Hummmm..... Interesting!
First I'm not a Christian, but an atheist.

Now for a guy I understand that the distionsry definition of adultery might be having sex with another woman when you are married.
I guess what Jesus meant was that even if you only have thoughts of doing it with another woman it's equivalent to adultery.

The question is - Are you married. If you are, do you have thoughts of another woman when you jerk off?

If you are not married it is not adultery.

All this is assuming you are a guy.

So please do not feel guilty about jerking off. It's one of the greatest pleasures in life and it harms no-one, but the Church doesn't like us to have pleasures, only guilt.

I hope this helps, but email me if you want

personally I think it is very healthy. I cant see the adultery connection - who are you cheating on? You cant cheat on your partner w/ yourself and you arent cheating on yourself if you are single, so where is the harm.
i guess you are oing with how men look at women and vice versa in say a porno video or magazine. men dont actually see women as just sexual beings to "let out"our sexual urges on. It is a fantasy, it is human to have fantasies and we are not perfect beings. We give into urges- that is part of what makes us human is that we ar efar from perfect - noone is and we give into natural desires.
I think the only wrong thing is that if you go around thinking and treat women just for that purpose. If you believe a woman i there to please you in bed and that is it and they have no ohter purpose so you treat them with inferiority, that is wrong. other wise it is natural and normal.

my opinion is that masturbation is healthy for you. It helps you develop into or keeps you satisfied instead of tracking down the corner slut. As far as what the bible says about pornography well you can always ask for forgiveness after wards.
I feel that he was trying to say that if you see women only as objects of lust or sex than your are not seeing a women for the beautiful person that they are.

When I masturbate I do it for the pure enjoyment of the act its self, not because I'm lusting after some woman. If I wanted a woman I could have my wife.

No masturbation isn't equal to adultery, it's not even close.

Don't feel guilty about it, masturbation is only with yourself and it's no one's business!

Drop the guilt trip....
