My oldest had that too.Her doctor told us to massage the duct as often as she would let us with gentle pressure starting at the side of her nose and going toward the bottom of her eye. I did this for months. When I started you could feel a large bump in her ducts. I was so scared she would need surgery. Gradually the lump shrank as the massage broke up the clog. By the time she was 10 months I could barely feel anything but kept up the massages anyway. At her 1 year check up the doctor said they were clear now. They weren't at her 9 month visit. I was SO relieved.
Has your doctor told you about the massage? Have you been doing it? It takes time but it really did work. If you haven't tried it I would recommend starting now. If you've been doing it keep it up it works.
With my daughter at around 8 months I had to do it while she slept or she would fuss and push my hands away.
Best wishes. Hope your little one doesn't need to have the surgery.

Both my sons tear ducts were blocked when he was born, the Doctor said that is does happen in some babies and it usually clears up, there is a little boy in my mothers group and his right tear duct has been blocked from birth and he is 10mo and getting it operated and cleared next week because it keeps on weeping and getting mucky, not infected but not able to clean itself properly. She massages the spot right on the inside corner if his eye where the eye is joined and it sometimes can help the tear duct, but her boy wont sit still long enough. My boys eyes cleared up, but when ever he gets a cold or flu his tear ducts get blocked and his eyes get mucky all over again. I would go to another Doctor, or the same one and try to get something done sooner rather than later. If you don't want the op then sometimes eye drops and tear duct massage can help. If that doesn't do anything the you will need some kind of surgical procedure. Or as a first choice before surgery, go and see a Chinese practitioner who does acupuncture, they may be able to help???
Good luck.

The condition is termed dacryostenosis, and is more bothersome than dangerous. The tear duct often opens spontaneously with time.

If the condition persists, the toddler is given an anesthetic and the eye surgeon inserts a probe into the tear duct. The probe is withdrawn and replaced by a tiny catheter. A dye is injected into the catheter and observed to ascertain that it flows properly into the nose. The procedure is almost always curative.

Years ago tear duct probing was done at an earlier age, but more recently we recommend tincture of time and elixir of patience.

Initially he should have a small needle like instrument inserted into the tear duct hole in the corner of the eye to see if it can be cleared manually, if not then there is a need for an operation.

It should definitely not be a matter of wait and see.

My mother's was so blocked they had to operate and a small tube was inserted down the tear duct and just inside her nose for the tear to drain down her nose. After a while the tube had made the tear duct opening bigger so it could be removed.

I would have something done about it now, you do not want your child to suffer from a constant tearing eye nor any damage that might occur due to infection.

Change your doctor.

yes, my baby had a tear duct clogged when she was a newborn and it took 3 months to be ok. Then it started in the other eye and it only took 2 weeks. You have to do soft massages on the tear duct to help it "unclog". Don't worry, I know how annoying it is, just do the massage with your clean index finger and keep your baby's eyes clean.
