Not many games are like what the old Zelda games were like anymore! Though if your into Zelda you might want to check out the Wii. It is the cheapest of the newer systems and has a Zelda game out for it already. It is more for younger gamers, as a lot of the games coming out for it are kiddie games, though there are more and more mature games coming out.
Other than that I would look at the 360. It has a great library of games, isn't too expensive for the better systems out and most of the bugs that it had when released are now fixed. (Just make sure you buy a newer one)
As for the games, not too sure about the role playing games, though looking at a site like the one in the link can give you an idea of what is out there.

I'd recommend going for the PS2 for sure. Zeldas gameplay style has changed over the years, as have many other game licenses that have been around as long. Some games seem to have survived on mere graphic quality alone as opposed to story and gameplay elements.
If you are interested at all in a more strategical type of RPG go for any of the Final Fantasy series. As mentioned X and XII are for the PS2, however the system is also backwards compatible allowing you to play Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX in their original PS1 glory. There are also a number 'ports' available of Final Fantasy games from older systems, FF I from the NES, and IV, V, and VI from the SNES, these are found for the PS1 with slightly updated graphics, added goodies, and new pre-rendered cut-scenes.
Overall PS2 is the best choice for RPGs since the backward compatibility allows you to dip into the two largest pools of games for that genre.
I would recommend the Final Fantasy series, as well as Legend of Dragoon for the PS1 (as an easier RPG), the Mana and Dragon Quest series's. There are so many more that you could play for years and never finish them all.

i suggest the wii, ps2, ds, or psp. the best one to choose would be the ps2 since it's more adversed in its variety of games. the graphics it could coprehend are high quality and its popularity is still high until now despite of other rival game consoles such as xbox360. ps3 is much better due to its high memory and better graphic work but games that have been released are still rare nowadays seeing that we are in the philippines :]
picking an "easy" rpg is more of your choice. usually, when someone is interested in a certain game, it would be their own resolve that they would either finish the whole game through or leave the game as it is (what a waste of money lol) if you want games similar to or which are zelda, then pick a wii (though it's limited to only a fair variety of games). the zelda games nowadays are higher in graphic design but if you want games similar to zelda and is still interested in the ps2, i suggest you take these:
> dawn of mana
> kingdom hearts 1 and/or 2 (it's a sequal and it's long but fun)
> final fantasy X-XII**
> .hack (there are 8 volumes all in all from what i recall but they're easy to do and the graphic design is nice especially when it comes to costume design)
> valkyrie profile:lenneth and profile:silmeria
* - XI is a computer game
* - final fantasy is somewhat a hard game it'll take ya long -_-;
NOTE: these games are all good in design and have complex conflict plots. choose them with knowing that some of these games are not really that easy at all but have great plot twists. HOPE YA ENJOY!! :]

The PS2 has a great selection of RPGs, and the games are all quite inexpensive because the PS3 is out. I'll list a few of my favorite RPGs for the PS2.
Final Fantasy X (10)
Dragon Quest VIII (8)
Final Fantasy XII (12)
Dark Cloud 2
Star Ocean - Till the End of Time
