I agree, "Because I Said So" is good. Also try "Rumor Has It." They're both funny and heartwarming.

You could also try "Parent Trap" (the remake with 11-year old Lindsay Lohan in it), "Something's Gotta Give", and "Stepmom."

On what else to offer her, try buying her favorite cake/dessert. Just small enough for the two of you. And / or make her her favorite dish. Mom's love anything their children make with their own hands :)

If you're not that confident in your cooking/food preparation skills, have a take-out dish on standby, for back-up :)

some good movies are -
a walk to remember
the notebook
beaches
legally blonde
hitch
transformers (not a girly movie but so worth watching)
because i said so
license to wed
good luck chuck (wait is that out on video yet...hmm)
princess bride
titanic
dream girls
music and lyrics
hairspray
the break up
clueless (but some mothers think its too juvenile)
far and away
moulan rouge
grease
a cinderella story
freedom writers
you've got mail
so much more but i hope this is enough to help
on the gift just give her what you know she likes, a book, movie, jewelery, perfume even if its like no surprise at all atleast you got her somethin or a tip i have never seen my mother or mother in law never be excited about flowers every woman loves flowers it doesnt always have to be from their husband or boyfriend its just as nice getting it from their kids

dirty dancing
titanic
grease
break up
armageddon(good for a tearful night)

and loads others, but perhaps go for dance films, soppy films or funny films, but try to steer clear of horror films, it's not exactly a mother daughter experience.

also get a big box of chocolates, and some snacks.
and depending of the sort of film you are watching:
soppy- get in the tissues and chocolates and a cusion each
dance- make sure you hav enough room to get up and join in, crisps with dips
comedy-once again tissues, and some candy

Get those Movies with Mom and Daughter in them... it will be cute to watch them together... Like Wedding Crashers or Freaky Friday or Princess Diaries.
Ask her for her list of favorites and watch them with her... so that she feels special about this night.
You can also choose one special movie that you want her to watch with you.
Enjoy :)
Lots of snacks should be on hand... and tissues too! ;)
