That's my point Erika, to make "the effort" to try to learn the basics at least !!

I think they should make every effort to try to learn. I don't agree with American students and workers having to take Spanish classes because the Mexicans aren't learning English. I have no problem with them being here...just saying they should be the one learning our language just as if I was to move somewhere I would expect to have to learn their language.

My husband's been here for 27 yrs and since the beginning he tried hard to "become one" as he says one must. Our language is not difficult except for the grammar, but really, he speaks better than many ppl here.
Of course, if it was Chinese, Korean, Thai, Arabic, Russian, German, etc... he probably wouldn't do as well.
We really think that if you are going to live anywhere, you must know enough to communicate with the natives there. It's not like you're visiting or they have the obligation to know your language, even if your language is supposed to be known worldwide.
We have some ppl from Taiwan here, the young ones usually do OK, but the older ones...don't even try talking to them...

Yup I think its ridiculous that they only speak their langauge amongst themselves. What happens if you get in a car accident with one of them and then you have to get a translator to deal with the situation. Its almost like they are anti-social with in the society. We are giving them all the luxuries in life but they wan't to treat it like as if they were still in their own country.

We cater to all of their needs. ATM's in 4 different languages, as well as all the 800 numbers for businesses have what number to push in their language as well. I think we need to stop it. Bring back the good old days.

Yes, the worse thing to happen to me is .....I call a government number and I get asked to press one for ENGLISH...why me? Let them have to press two for their language. English is the language spoken here FIRST!
