I like all the above answers.
La Jolla is probably the prettiest but it's also very oriented to the wealthy and so if you might be turned off by conspicuous consumption, that might not be ideal. Very much a villege atmosphere, as long as you are in the parts of La Jolla that are part of the villege, such as near the La Jolla Cove/Prospect Ave. area. The La Valencia is one of the nicer hotels there. (My friend ate breakfast there once and ran into Dustin Hoffman.) Lots of expensive shopping and top restaurants all within walking distance, as are the Museum of Modern Art at an awesome ocean view site, Children's Cove (where the sealions are) and kayaking to La Jolla Caves.
Not as pretty, but still nice is the Birdrock area of La Jolla. Less formal, more funky, but still expensive. Lots of surfers/swimmers/divers hang in that area.
If you're looking for a place to stay in La Jolla, be aware that there are lots of hotels near the 5 Freeway which are nice but not the villege atmosphere at all...not what you are looking for. You'd have to drive to that. So where you stay would be critical as "La Jolla" covers a lot of different areas.
Del Mar is nice, however L'Auberge is now closed for about 6 months for a massive remodel. There are other places to stay there but not on the level of L'Auberge. In that area, there's a beautiful, long stretch of beach at the foot of cliffs that runs from Torrey Pines to the central villege area that's very beautiful. Black's Beach can only be accessed by scooting along the cliff face (not recommended as people are always falling off and requiring emergency rescues) or walking on the beach for several miles. I think that's the prettiest stretch of beach in the county, and because of the inaccessibility, usually few people. Part of it is a nude beach but not a lot of people go there for that anymore. Also, you have to look at a tide chart before you go so that your not stuck on a beach at high tide without a way to get back up.
Coronado is pretty, very touristy. Nice beach. Hotel Del Coronado is busy area. Big Naval air station near there so you have to decide if thats a plus or minus. More conservative feeling to town because of that. Difference between Coronado and the other beach areas are that the others are at the foot of cliffs, but Coronado is flat as a pancake, on a spit of land with the San Diego Bay on one side and the ocean on the other.
If you like funky beachtown atmosphere I would suggest north county communities of Encinitas and Leucadia. Or another cool area in north county is Carlsbad. The villege area there is around Carlsbad Village Dr. and Carlsbad Blvd. The north county beaches are less congested, more open feeling, and a little less exclusive in atmosphere. Although the beaches are beautiful they aren't as spectacular as, say, La Jolla Cove area.
Suggest you avoid Imperial Beach as although it's cheep it's too close to the border and subject to beach closures because of polution.

1.Coronado is hands down the cleanest seaside area of San Diego they have all their specialty high end shops and yet still have the classic antique look. A lot of their homes are humble and cozy with well groomed landscaping. its soo quiet because the people that only go there are the people living their and some tourist. The home owners pay a special fee just living in Coronado and they must do community service as well to up keep Coronado
2.Del Mar is another great one although it still can get a bit busy because there are a lot of corporate businesses in the area so watch out for lunch hours or traffic times
3. La jolla has its moments but to be honest i think it is getting played out.. some of the beaches are over crowed causing the beaches to become dirty!if you dint mind the hike the best beach in La Jolla would be blacks beach..

Coronado Island in San Diego is super sea coast city...upscale, sparkling with a lot of issues to do, eating places, cycling, procuring, a gondola holiday. The sea coast is acceptable and sparkling and you have an exquisite view of the San Diego skyline at night.

La Jolla and Coronado are two of my favorite beaches for a picturesque scene. In Coronado you can see the whole sky line of SD at night one way and if you look the other way you see Mexico lights.

I'd personally vote for Coronado as #1 and then Delmar as No.2. LaJolla is not far behind, but it's crowded and not quite as picturesque overall.
