How would you think a UK citizen could show a passport in a UK hotel if he/she didn't hold a passport? Therein lies the answer for the UK. Elsewhere (abroad!) they probably do on the grounds that the hotel "has to submit a list of visitors to the local police" which of course is crap - they get your details out of it for advertising purposes - how else would I keep getting rubbish through the post from foreign travel companies ! ! !

There is a legal requirement ON THE HOTEL to complete a registration card for each staying guest.
Most get the guests to fill them out - hence the large numbers of 'Mr & Mrs Smith' staying in hotels at any one time.
There is no obligation on the guest to carry a passport or any other form of id. or to show it.

In Italy, hotels are required to complete a form for each guest and this gets sent to the local police (who promptly bin it). The form needs to show a passport or national identity card number.

In Austria there is a requirement for you to show an ID document on registering with a hotel. For foreign nationals this would be a passport.
I don't think we have such a law here in the UK, though.
