All I know is that Russia was under tsarist rule prior to 1917.

Russia was a monarchy in 1900, ruled by the Czars. The Russian monarchy was overthrown by the communists later. It was smaller than the Soviet Union. Communications in those days were poor - almost no telephones, poor roads, few rail lines. The usual national groups. It was governed easily because most of the country consisted of poor peasants ruled by powerful feudal lords. It was just beginning to industrialize.
