My hard drive is defective (I'm sure of this, its making weird noises and all that) what can I do as far as fixing it? It's an Acer 5050 I purchased it in July.

Please, don't answer unless you're sure you know.

Best thing to do is go to Walmart and buy another one for about $60. They are easy to install. Just read the instructions and pay attention to where it says place the "jumper" if needed.

The one you bought may still be under warranty.

1. Replace it and lose your un-backed up personal data..

2. Send it to a Data Recovery Service to retrieve all your personal data, then see # 1.

3. Go to http://www.grc.com and buy SpinRite 6. If your hard drive is salvageable, this will do it. It's NOT free, but worth every penny!!!
