I moved her into a breeding box about a week ago. She started to gave birth about 8 hours ago I am thinking, the first fry was still born. She started to have another about 3 hours later, but it took her another 5 hours to give birth to that fish which was also still born. So at this point in 8 hours, there have been 2 fry born and both were still born. What is going wrong here? Does it normally take a livebearer 5 + hours to birth a single fish? Why are they dead? Is there anything I can do? I hope this made sense any thanks in advance for advice, or info you can give.

I breed platies and it happens sometimes. When you want to save the fry it IS suggested that you put the mom in a breeder net/trap, separate tank about a week before she's ready to release the fry to lessen the stress and get her used to the place she is in. I myself do it about 3-4 days prior. Given the fact that every fish is different, a week may have been too long for this fish, but I don't think that's the case. Since you said that it took her SO LONG to have these fry, I would imagine there is something else going on. If she's still fat I would personally do about a 25% water change and raise the temp a degree or 2 and see if that helps her along. The other alternative you have is to put her back in the big tank and make sure there are a lot of hiding places for the fry. Maybe she'll release with better luck in the tank. Then you can either scoop the fry up with a net and put them in the big net, or, you could let them take their chances at making it. That is obviously totally up to you.

I hope this helps. If you need any other info. you can e-mail me if you'd like.

Good luck!!! ;o)

I think she's aborting her fry because she was really stressed out
you stated that you had her already a whole week before that in the breeder, which means enormous stress on her because of no space to swim around
I would recommend letting her out, or you might have a dead female as well
For the future it's better to leave her in the main tank if you have lot's of live plants or get yourself a 2.5 gallon tank with heater and filter as a breeding tank

Hope that helps
Good luck

What, your platy can't push out the babies?? Thats just insane!!! Now a livebearer does not take birth in 5 hours. Second, she might be aborting her fry. Third, you should have a good breeding tank.
