All sacks are tackles, not a tackles are sacks. A sack is when you tackle the QB (and only the QB) behind the line a scrimmage while he has the ball witch is also a tackle. But tackles are that and every thing else when you bring down the ball carrier

A tackle can take place anywhere on the field. A "sack" is when the QB is tackled behind the line of scrimmage, and is still holding the ball.

A tackle is just knocking down the guy with the ball...A sack is knocking down the QB while he has the ball behind the line of scrimmage...A sack ALWAYS means loss of yardage...A tackle does not...

Technically, all the answers before mine are wrong. Some are close though.

A tackle is made when a defensive player knocks down the offensive player carrying the ball.

A tackle for loss is made when a defensive player knocks down the offensive player carrying the ball behind the line of scrimmage (so the result of the play is a loss of yards).

A sack is made when a defensive player knocks down the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage WHEN THE QB IS NOT ATTEMPTING TO RUN WITH THE BALL. It is possible for the QB to be tackled for a loss without being sacked if he is attempting to run with the ball (rather than attempting to throw the ball) when he is tackled.

A tackle can be made anywhere on the field. A sack is made only if a defensive player knocks down the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage while the quarterback is trying to throw a pass.
