Is this trivia?

If so, I'm pretty sure it's Bob Montgomery.

He was able to bat without it as recent as 1979 due to a grandfather clause.

Montgomery is the name I recall as well.

The helmet rule was enacted in 1971, with all players who preferred not to wear a helmet "grandfathered" against having to comply.

Same thing happened with the helmet flap circa 1980. The last flapless wearers were Gaetti and Raines.
