a newborn's stomach is just starting to work can't handle more than a couple of ounces yet. that's why they take in small amounts every few hours.

My son was the same way up until a few weeks ago, he is now 7 weeks old. (Time really flies enjoy it!) My son would nurse for 5 minutes and than fall asleep on the breast, but wouldn't eat until at least 1 1/2-2 hours later. My lactation consultant just said that he probably got enough from you other wise he'd still be crying from hunger. Plus when they are little, they really don't need that much anyways. And when you are breastfeeding you can't really ever tell how much he actually gets, unlike formula fed babies who get the same amount each time. You also can't overfeed a breastfed baby because they only get the amount they want and need. My son still nurses for only about 10 minutes and that seems to satisfy his hunger for about 1 1/2-2 hours. He's also sleeping 5-6 hours a night now, thank goodness. It's not every night though, we still have some 4 hour nights, but we're finally starting to get into a semi routine. He's still so young, they don't really get used to the routine until about 3 months.

It's very normal. That's why new parents don't get that much sleep at first. They get woken up every few hours because the baby is hungry and crying to be fed. It's even more frequent with breastfeeding mothers because their milk is more easily digested by the baby than formula so the baby becomes hungry more often. Right now, this sort of feeding is just a phase. The baby's digestive system will become more mature in a few weeks and so the baby will be able to sleep through the night. Just hang in there. I went through this myself. I recall that with my older daughter, I had to feed her every few hours. Then one morning, I woke up to find my breasts feeling as hard as rocks and leaking profusely. My baby had slept through the night.

My girl will be 7 months on the 16th. I feed her every 2 hours or more.. When she was younger, I would feed her as often as she would take it. Too much though could give them gas, and they can become colic (not good). I did feed as often as possible to get my milk going so I can pump. How much you feed on monday determines how much you produce on tues.. and so on and so on.. hope this helps! don't give up, EVER! Breastfeeding is the best!

very normal and very good!! If it were less than 2 hourly it might be a problem but 3 hourly is great. You will be able to start to stretch him out to 4 hourly soon.

Good luck and congrats on baby and breastfeeding!
