Well the word 'mosquito' is Spanish meaning 'little FLY'.
Seriously though, there are varieties of fly that do bite.
Here are a few examples:
Cluster Fly, Deer Fly, Face Fly, Horse Fly, Midges and the Stable Fly.

Ja some people said it already the common house fly does not bite but Tse tse flies do, but if you were getting bitten by a tse tse fly you'd be dead or dying by now, and depending were you are in Africa they are mostly wiped out. You are probably getting bitten by horse flies, looks similar to the house fly but a more dusty colour, it's bite really hurts and unlike a mosquito you can feel the bite whilst it is happening. Tabard or some other insect repellent may help a bit.

Yes they can...it was some 40 years ago and I was attacked by what looked exactly like flies. It only happened one season for only a few days.

YES. A fly can "bite". It has mouth parts designed to suck up liquids and can pierce. It can bite humans and other animals. Just like the mosquitoes, its bite can transmit diseases too.
Check out this link to see different kind of biting flies.

Yes, if you've ever owned a horse you'd know. A certain fly will even lay eggs in your skin.
