I use small diameter nylon rope and an old steel weight set to hold the sled on the roof without damaging singles.A couple of 10# plates holds the sled in place every winter.

Here is what I did. I attached a 6' 4x4 for the roof peak of my garage, and a 8' 4x4 for my chimney stack. Than i strung 2 1/8" cables with turnbuckles between the 2 poles. At night it looks like Santa is landing on the roof. After the season is over, i chau the screw holes that i made in the peak and chimney.
This idea took me 4 years to figure out the safest and best way to achieve this. If you have anymore questions feel free to contact me.

Give the 10 to Snoman.
Not being a FAN of Christmas decorations; or of climbing around on a roof; His suggestion is by far; better than any form of BRACKETING/ SCREWING/ NAILING/ etc.

There are many hardware options specifically for this purpose. Talk to someone at a home improvement store, to find out what would work best for you.
