If you do have a memory problem then it can lead it intermittent and seemingly random hangs.
The quickest way to check is to go into the BIOS setup when you first start the system and enable the full set of BIOS checks.
Most BIOSes are set to a quick test that basically looks to see that memory is there, and how much. The long or full tests will actually test the memory.
For a fuller test there are probably freeware memory exercisers that will pick up more esoteric problems.
If you do not have anti-virus and anti-spyware get them and run them on a regular basis.
A registry cleaner is also a good thing to run every so often.

Yes sounds like you could have inadvertently activated a virus. If you get pop ups when on line telling you that something is wrong with your comp, or that your computer is slow press this to speed up e.t.c then Never click on them,as your found out they are scams. You need to get a good anti-virus and run a Complete scan of your computer. Do you use Internet explorer? If so have you downloaded and installed Windows defender from Microsoft update? Do both of these things and your comp should be OK. Now the Game, this could be crashing either due to the virus or just because it is a buggy game, sometimes games just crash and could be for too many reasons to list here. Just make sure your Internet security is tight, virus up to date, spyware(defender) installed, your firewall is on, (go to control panel - Security center - turn ON firewall) It should be on a default anyway if you have XP SP2. The only prob is will your comp let you install or run the anti virus? If not as a last resort It may be worth saving your important files, and formatting hard drive, Reinstalling windows, and getting your security sorted properly and keep on top of it. Also make sure your running genuine windows and it has all latest updates for windows and all your hardware. Sorry this is long winded but computers are complicated beasts, hope this helps ya....

I had a problem similar to this where my monitor would shut off for a minute and then turn back on with everything ok. The problem was the Video card. It had a seized fan and was over heating- thus shutting off my monitor. I took out the video card and used the on-board video and it stopped doing that.
I would stake it on the video card if it is external video. If your HP has an on-board video on the Mother Board, I would bet it's probably faulty, so the MB is freaking out. I would try a new Video card, then a new MB. Good luck!

its possible that the video failed, i would try a card, but also uninstall that game and run virus scan & spyware scans on computer, do a disc clean & defragX2, because it also sounds like a virus when it ask you to buy program for checking ram error.
also go to pcworld.com and to their download library and find one of their free registry repair programs as it also sounds like their are errors in the area also.
not sure I would install that game again, as it my have been the cause of your problems
