The feed dogs should transport a strip of fabric through the presser foot straight, with no "helping". Check to see if the feed dogs are up all the way, and check the presser foot pressure.
New needle every 2-8 hours of actual sewing time. Make sure it's right way around -- wrong way causes skipped stitches.

As for the jamming, the three likely explanations are 1) the machine is dirty (be sure to get the "felt" that forms under the feed dogs and needle plate evicted!) You may also need to remove the bobbin case and clean and oil, and clean the top tension.

OR

2) you're not getting the thread in the top tension disks (major cause of loopies on the bottom of the fabric). Raise the presser
foot before threading the top. You can lower the foot to thread the needle. Raising the presser foot opens the upper tension so the thread can enter it; dropping the presser foot closes the tension disks so the upper thread is under tension.
OR

3) you're not starting a seam correctly. Here's how:

a) Raise thread takeup lever to its highest point if it's not there already. Raise the presser foot.
b) Pull 4-6" of both top and bobbin thread out.
c) Bring the two threads back behind the presser foot.
d) Position your work under the presser foot. Use the handwheel to drop the needle (make sure you're turning the handwheel in the correct direction).
e) Lower the presser foot
f) Holding on to the threads behind the presser foot, make 1-3
stitches with the handwheel. Drop the thread ends and sew
normally.

Hanging on to the threads at the beginning of the seam stops those thread caterpillars on the bottom beginning of a seam from forming. And most of the jamming stops -- you really have to work at it to get thread jams if you start this way.

Is it time for the annual cleaning and tuneup? If you skip it, your machine is sure to mess up.

Also, make sure you got your thread all the way into the little slot of the bobbin case, and clean out the hook race (where the bobbin case goes) with a paint brush. Yank off the sole plate and get the little felted bits out from around the feed dogs.

The sole plate is the surface under the needle and the feed dogs are the two metal tracks that pull your material through.

Is it feeding through at all? Make sure you didn't drop your feed dogs. Also check and make sure the feed dogs are ok.
I had a 70s model singer that the feed dogs actually broke.
Don't know when but a about half of the teeth were gone on the one.

also is the pressure adjusted properly so it is actuall lowering the foot and applying enough pressure for the feed dogs to to catch the fabric and move it.
