i see this all the time at my shelter. people leave animals in cages at our front door on a regular basis (one time they left 2 huge pigs in a crate out there for us, we had to call a different shelter to take them because we didn't have farm animal permits, sheesh.) we've had animals turned in for all sorts of absurd reasons, from "the dog has fleas" to "the cat doesn't match the couch" to "we got a new puppy and our house does better with just one dog so here's our 8 yr old dog." we've taken in animals that were dumped off elsewhere - someone left a rottie pup, a keeshond pup and two kittens in a very small cage to die behind the local VFW hall in the middle of winter. then there are the many animals dumped off out in the country, as if they're doing anyone a favor - for some reason people feel that just because you own 20 acres, you must WANT 135 cats running around out there. i have a million similar stories from my yrs in the shelter. this sickens and angers me simply because all these people have to do is call us - we would find room somewhere.

your anger is understandable. i'd be upset too, especially since they lied about it. hope it's a situation where your relationship can be healed if you eventually sit and tell them your feelings. it's better than leaving it all bottled up.

Yes, I know several people who have done it. When I had horses I'd go riding (I live in the country/mountains,) and find puppies etc. that thankfully haven't been eaten by predators yet. I do not believe this is right, so understand I am not saying this was right, but there was one dog that I was actually happy for it.

I had (I do not consider that person family anymore,) a relative who had a beautiful dog, part GSD, part coyote. He spent his whole life after weaning on a chain, those yuck ones that knot up/rust. The poor thing was starving all the time, rarely had water, never fresh as his dish was never cleaned. It was a sad life!

He ended up shying from humans, and if he was lucky to break from his leash he survive on wild rabbits he caught. He would let you pet him, but if he did not know you, he would growl and try and run, which wasn't far on a short chain.

One day I noticed he wasn't there anymore, I though he might have died from starvation. He had a thick coat, like a sable GSD, but his ribs spine, hips etc showed through. I had called animal control, but when they came they didn't take him.

Since they had to bring the dog to the vet or get fined etc. my relative dropped him off in the middle of nowhere, where you'd see wild animals. It was by a creek that ran year round, and had plenty of grown to keep rabbits and other small game near.

In a way I am glad she did drop him off, and he hadn't gone to the pound, because there is no way he would have been adopted out due to his fear of strangers, and aggression when he felt cornered.

So, although I do feel it is wrong, I have to admit there is always a flip side, even if it is a small one out of millions of wrong ones!

If you live in a rural area not too far from a city, you will find that it happens all the time. People drive out there with their dogs and then let them loose and leave. Sometimes, the dogs have the evidence of a recently removed collar. This is a big problem in rural areas because if the dogs aren't first killed by traffic or other predators, they can join up with packs of other dogs and attack livestock as well as people. Many people who live in these areas will shoot the dogs to protect themselves and their livestock so don't assume that if you dump a dog out there, it will be adopted by someone. It usually doesn't.

I wish I did! I just investigated a "dog dumping" where the pup was thrown from a moving vehicle. I adopt the little guy on Saturday.
I'll never truly understand the coldness of the human heart, sometimes.

Where did they dump the pet? At a shelter or just out of the car somewhere? At the no-kill cat shelter I volunteer with we see this all the time.

In one recent week the animals coming in including a litter of kittens found in a bag in a dumpster, a box of kittens tossed out of a moving vehicle on the highway (two died, three survived), and another litter of kittens left in a TIED bag next to a garbage can.

At a shelter I used to volunteer at two beautiful white Persians were dropped at the shelter because "their fur shows up too much on our new leather sofa".

We see ALL the time the excuse that "new apartment doesn't allow cats". Well there's so many that DO so that excuse REALLY pisses me off.

I recently adopted a gorgeous Exotic Shorthair cat from our shelter. The daughter had gone off to college and the parents "just didn't have time" for her. They said that if we didn't come get her right away they were going to have here EUTHANIZED! She's 5 and one of the sweetest most loving cats I've ever had. I havn't known anyone personally but people used to dump dogs over my back fence. I once had a pregnant rabbit shoved through a bedroom window while nobody was home and the meanest hamster I have ever met was left on my front lawn while I was at school one day.

I haven't known them personally, but quite a few people have ended up dumping their animals on ME, because I took them in after someone abandoned them in the neighborhood. Just a sucker, I guess.

Yes my ex did that and I yelled at him for 3 hrs because he could have given me the animal to take. I would have found them a good home.

It happens all the time. Some animal welfare organizations have pick-up services for these poor strays so they don't become injured in traffic or die a horrible death on the streets.
