It does not matter how old a girl is she has to give permission for her mother to be in the room. I was 14 when I had my 1st pap and went alone the Dr couldn't tell my mother anything about it due to the Hippa law I live in Ky, but it is the same in all states as far as I'm aware.

At 18 you are considered an adult. Having your mom or anyone else for that matter is up to you. In fact, a female of any age can be seen by a gyn without a parent in the room. There is a law now, about results being given to anyone other than the pt. It is illegal for the doctors office to give info to anyone not specifically written by you as approved. There should be no information told to the parent. Although, in general the rule is a good one, remember though, that if parents pay the medical bills, chances are they will know what type of tests you had done.
I would bring it up to the doctor and his or her staff, that this was done, and illegal if the daughter was not asked permission. The daughter does have a case, if she wishes.
Any and all results should be directed to the patient ONLY. Unless you actually write down that is is alright for mom to know, they cannot legally give out the information.
What you said in your question is illegal, and the doctor could face legal charges of invasion of privacy, releasing information to unauthorized people...
The only exclusion is if the female patient is diagnosed with chlamydia and the health department must be notified.

Legal issue is at 18 if you are old enough to die for your country you are considered grown
Time to give the daughter some privacy and let her and her doctor figure out the next step on your future grandchildren.
You do not need to give your daughter a complex and a grand fear of you. She may have had encounters that she does not need your time to freak out...in the process...
I got space at 18 and feared the doctor would run back and tell Mom I was not a virgin...I cared but I just could not face her tap dance...and the ride home and the daddy tap dance so I did not do nothing...It kind of cost me in the end a long story...I think at 16 here in Michigan you have the right not to have Mom in the room and you can ask for birth control...It is going to happen by nature and it is the most normal feeling in the world the big S and I feel men in history have put legal pressure and put religious pressure on women because of the whole who is the Daddy issue. All you need is to declaire the Mother and the Child is the family and the Father can say or leave if he wants to....
It is a time to cut the apron strings sit back not worry and let nature take its course...
She will come to you and tell you in her time the problems of her health....
So sit back relax and read a magazine in the waiting room and give her a nice quiet ride home...
Doctors and Nurses are not required to tell you anything...even in HIV or AIDS
Think how you would feel in your daughters shoes and see it from her point of view...You can not picture your MOM at bedside if you are on your honeymoon...come on not that the exam is a beautiful thing but it is something you want to forget not remember that your MOM WAS HERE

No, its not acceptable - without the daughter's express wish - for there to be anyone but medical personnel in the room during a pap smear. Some doctors will not allow other than medical personnel in the room, even if the patient would prefer it. Some male doctors do like to have a female nurse in the room too.
At 18, she is an adult and the doctor is not allowed to report the results of any test to anyone other than the patient, unless she expressly wishes it.
If this happened to you, I would recommend that you seek help from the Medical Ethics Board.
It would be against medical ethics if the doctor allowed the parent to over-rule the patient's wishes.

Under the federal law of HIPPA the parent can't be in the room with her 18 year old daughter during the exam or know the results of the exam unless the daughter gives permission.
If the doctor allows the mom in to the room without permission from the daughter they could get fined.

If the daughter wants her father or mother to be present whilest she is getting her pap smear thats fine if the doctor agrees to it. The doctor will not share the results or let them watch the procedure without the patients concent.
Why don't you just make it a family thing?
Does she have a little brother?

I don't know which state you're from, but in California we have what's called a HIPPA law....NO ONE under ANY circumstance is allowed to know anything about your medical history, test results, past or future appointments and such....It is up to the patient if they would want their parent in the room with them at the age of 18. . . why would they though? Pap smears isn't a family affair.

if she doesn't want you in there... you cannot be in there. She's an adult now and can do what she wants. Not sure about it being illegal to be in there if she says no... but I'm sure it is.
**edit!
yes it is against the law for the doctor to allow the mom in there without daughters permission if she's over 18. Its against the HIPPA law. I just checked with an authority figure to answer this

I agree with most of the answers above. From a medico-legal perspective, the doctor (male or female) should have a chaperon in the room too. That's 3 people already. If the 18y old still needs the reassurance of a parent/guardian/friend being around, she and she alone has the authority to approve who should be in the room with her.

If the daughter wants her mom in the room, then yes it is.
If the daughter wants her mom to hear the results, then yes it is.
If the daughter does NOT want the parent in the room, then the parent will NOT be in the room. The daughter is 18, a legal adult, so it is HER choice.
