This is because the iPod Touch utilizes a lot more memory/RAM (which takes up physical space as well as $$$) to run unique applications (e.g. touch interface, Safari, etc.) that the original iPod or new iPod classic don't have. As memory continues to get physically smaller/cheaper, the iPod Touch should be able to hold more songs/videos in the future.

Gigabits? Gigabytes.Probably because it takes alot more space to have the touch screen interface and they have to reduce the storage capacity to keep it relatively small.
