Trench coats are long overcoats that protect you from the rain. Think Dick Tracy and the 1920's-50's detective movies.

A trench coat or trenchcoat is a raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton drill or poplin, or in some cases leather: it generally has a removable insulated lining; and it is usually knee-length or longer.
The difference between the two is that the term Overcoat is a generalised term signifying a long coat worn over other items of clothing such as a suit or dress, uniform or even casual clothes. Overcoats extend below the knee over the shins but are sometimes mistakenly referred to as topcoats, which are short coats that end at or above the knees. Topcoats and overcoats together are known as outercoats. Unlike overcoats, topcoats are usually made from lighter weight cloth such as gabardine or covert, while overcoats are made from heavier cloth or fur. This is because overcoats are more commonly used in winter so warmth is more important.
Now, about "where can i buy it?", well, why not try ebay? ;)

Hoped I helped you! :)

Wikipedia's definition: "A trench coat or trenchcoat is a raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton drill or poplin, or in some cases leather: it generally has a removable insulated lining; and it is usually knee-length or longer."

Dictionary.com: "a waterproof overcoat styled along military lines, belted, with straps on the shoulders and lower sleeves."'

It's generally a lighter coat - if you live somewhere with cold winters, it would be more of a spring/fall coat, though if you live somewhere like California, it might be all you need year-round. It's more of a cool-rainy-day coat, NOT a take-refuge-from-the-freezing-snow coat.

You can find them online at many places you can buy clothes/coats in general. Just for starters: eBay, Amazon.com, Overstock.com.

A trench coat got it's name from World War 1 when the soldiers fought in the trenches. The army issued trench coats because they came down well below the knees and provided more warmth than a shorter jacket. The trenches of Europe were muddy, cold and very wet.

I would describe it as a double breasted coat with lapels and a belt. It can be worn year round if it has a zip in acrylic winter lining. Frequently worn as a raincoat.
I found a ladies' 3/4 length one at QVC without a winter liner, so it could not be worn year round.
At JC Penney, I found 4 that include men's & women's.

Winter overcoats have fur collar lining and thicker inside sewn linings.

Trench coats are thin, suited more for semi-muggy / foggy damp weather.

Both coats are long when worn.

The previous answers cover what a trench coat is & what it looks like.

If you get a trench coat w/ a zip out or button out lining, it can be worn 2-3 seasons.
