I love dogs, cats, and other furry animals, but I'm afraid of snakes and other reptiles. Will that prevent me from being hired at a pet store?

First of all you have to be 18, and it might not be a good idea if they want you to clean out the reptile cages.

I worked at a pet store for a while. I used to hate reptiles, snakes, tarantulas, and other creepy crawlies. I eventually was around them so much I lost my hatred and learned to appreciate them.

I'm sure there are lots of people working in pet stores that are afraid of snakes, and other critters. However I'm sure you will have other employees to help you out, and there is more to a pet store than just the animals. You could ask to work as a cashier, stocker, or something else non-creepy crawlie related.

I don't believe that would be a problem if you told the employers you are afraid of reptiles. Many people don't like them so a fear of them is understandable. You can ask to work in other departments where you don't have to come into contact with reptiles and leave the handling of them to other people who just love being around them.

You certainly can. Just let the hiring manager/store manager know ahead of time. And if you are only applying to be either a groomer, cashier, or stocker then you won't have to do anything with the animals anyway. Just don't apply to be in Pet Care because they have to feed, water, mist, and the clean out the cages for the lizards.

There's a lot more to do than clean reptile cages. Employers are realistic. Most people don't like every animal. So it would be a rare find to hire someone who did.
Go apply, not liking reptiles won't disqualify you one bit.

You only have to be 16 to work at Petsmart (18 for Petco) and you can still work in customer service if you are afraid of animals; you just wouldn't be able to work in Animal Care

If you are old enough to work then apply for either store. If you are the right candidate that they are looking for then it wouldn't matter if you like reptiles or not....but could depend on what position you want to be hired as.

I work at petco and I can not stand crickets! I'm mean i cry when I think about touching them! YUCK!
You just have to let your manager know that you don't like them!
hope this helps.
