Lactic acid fermentation ensures that the muscle cells can continue with glycolysis. Without oxygen, the cells cannot do aerobic respiration, so all they have to get energy is glycolysis. Lactic acid fermentation takes away the end products of glycolysis and makes NAD+ available again for glycolysis to continue. Even though glycolysis only yields two ATPs, it's better than nothing.
