FRYED OKRA?? It is great! Plain okra isn't is as good but it is still good.

Okra isn't a good food to eat all the time though.

Here is some really interesting information on okra...

Okra comes from a large vegetable plant thought to be of African origin, and it was brought to the United States three centuries ago by African slaves. The word, derived from the West African nkruma, was in use by the late 1700s. Grown in tropical and warm temperate climates, it is in the same plant family as hibiscus and cotton.

Okra is usually available fresh year-round in the South, and from May to October in many other areas. You can also find okra frozen, pickled, and canned, and in some regions you might find frozen breaded okra for deep frying. When buying fresh okra, look for young pods free of bruises, tender but not soft, and no more than 4 inches long. Okra may be stored in the refrigerator in a paper bag or wrapped in a paper towel in a perforated plastic bag for 2 to 3 days, or it may be frozen for up to 12 months after blanching whole for 2 minutes. Cooked okra can be stored (tightly covered) in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

When cut, okra releases a sticky substance with thickening properties, often used in soups and stews. Gumbos, Brunswick stew, and pilaus are some well-known dishes which frequently use okra.

Okra can be served raw, marinated in salads or cooked on its own, and goes well with tomatoes, onions, corn, peppers, and eggplant. Whole, fresh okra pods also make excellent pickles. Its mild flavor can be compared to eggplant, though the texture is somewhat unusual.

WOW!! That was really interesting.

Do you like okra?

I didn't even know what the heck it was until I was nearly 40 years old, and was treated to a whirlwind tour of Memphis by a close Southern Gentleman friend. We went to a truly down-home-Southern-cookin' restaurant, where everything was deep-fried, right down to the dill pickles. It was a test of my sheer will (and desire not to offend my host) to down the deep-fried catfish -- but the okra, to my amazement, I loved!

I've found okra in the supermarket just once (I'm out west), so I grabbed some, went home, and had to Google a recipe... and it turned out great! (Especially since I went the healthier route and used cold-pressed virgin olive oil to fry it in -- it wasn't half so greasy!)

I may gag on deep-fried catfish, and that terrible thing y'all call grits -- but I do like me some okra!

I use to make a huge pot of Creole Gumbo and freeze most of it. When I was going to college, I would take it for lunch. mmmmm
Strange, now I'm not as fussy about Okra but will have to try it one more time. You are so right--not a big crowd pleaser!!

No it is not, but I'm from the south and we like our okra down here. I think the best way to eat it is to cut it, put it in buttermilk, take it out and dredge it in a slightly seasoned flour/cornmeal mixture and deep fry it. Take it out a drain it on paper towel. Salt it while it's hot! That's what we call "Southern Popcorn!"

Great vegetable if cooked properly. Here in Texas we call 'em "slicks" because most people don't know how to prepare them and they end up being slimy. That's what turns them off. Doesn't have to be that way. They have a distinct taste and texture. They're used in Gumbo...salads..and pickled. I love the pickled ones. Check out some recipes here.

My take on Okra - it's a vegetable mainly eaten fried in the south.

I don't have much of and opinion on it one way or another, but one time I was at a buffet style resturaunt and one of the dishes was fried okra, and this blonde bimbo (not that all blondes are bimbos but this one shure was) exclaims VERRY loudly " EVERYONE STOP EATING! THEY ARE SERVING FRIED ORCA AND EATING WHALES IS BAD" and everyone started laughing and she seriously didn't know what we were all laughing at, that was the best time I ever had at a buffet!

I love okra if it's prepared right, otherwise it's just sticky and slimy.
