Do fish sleep? I'm talking about the ones that live in rivers. If they sleep, wouldn't the river just wash them out to the ocean?

Well, for sure they do "sleep" in a different manner not the same way other animals sleep. Being "asleep" could mean differently to different fish.

Some fish may reduce their awareness but do not fall unconscious like the higher vertebrates. There are periods when fish become less aware of their surroundings but their brain waves do not change (no REM sleep). They are not quite asleep but not fully awake either.

They have different resting behavior which could actually be "sleep" for them. They could be sleeping on the logs, along the cracks of the rocks, or they could sleep while moving.

Their manner of sleeping do not loss their consciousness, so they won't just be washed away out to the ocean.

convinced, your fish DO sleep, frequently at nighttime at the same time as the lighting fixtures are out (I do wish once you've a tank with a elementary that you turn it off so the fish can sleep) ... this style of 'waft' to the bottom of the tank, or into the flowers and do not flow till the elementary comes again on. I absolutely have 2 oscars, and at the same time as they were small, I used to imagine the albino tiger changed into sick because each and every morning i ought to face up and it must be leaning hostile to the glass on the bottom of the tank, at the same time as the different one (black tiger) must be contained in the technique the tank on the bottom and sitting up straighter ... they are both about 10" now, and are somewhat healthful ... and that i now can tell at the same time as my different fish are 'asleep' through ways they 'swim' (extremely, they are not swimming at the same time as they are asleep, they basically sit down nonetheless for lengthy sessions) ... so watch your fish and also you'll see that they DO sleep, basically frequently no longer at the same time as there are human beings round observing them.

Maybe they're just like whales?
Whales use both parts of their brain, they sleep by shutting one side off and alternate it when they need to.
I can't really imagine a fish sleeping. seems like they;re always awake.. like whales.
