4 yards means 4 cubic yards
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
4 (cubic) yards of mulch = 108 cubic feet (27 x 4)
108 cubic feet / cubic feet per bag = bags required
I would guess that mulch bags contain 2 to 4 cubic feet
108 / 2 cubic ft per bag = 54 bags
108 / 4 cubic ft per bag = 27 bags

One bag of mulch spread 2" thick will cover an area about 4 times the size of the flat, empty bag.

Read the bag. It tells you how many cubic feet are in a bag, and the area it will cover in square feet, two or three inches deep. One cubic foot is a cube, one foot on each side.
