You could get some styrafoam board and cut out the shapes that you need. You might want to paint them so maybe some acryllic paint would help. Go to an art store and ask about what they think you should mount your project on. It will probably depend on how big you're going to make it. Maybe you can get a panelboard that has a border on the back that you can use for hanging. You can use gluestick for attaching the pieces of styrofoam to the board. Check on the internet for staphylococci bacteria to see what it looks like or else go to the library and ask a librarian to help you locate a picture of it. It sounds like a fun project. You can also paint the panel. You could ask for GessoBoard instead of panelboard. It will probably be made out of mica and pre-painted with gesso so if you want to paint it as well it will be ready for you. You might want to use some gesso to cover the styrofoam pieces to create a tecture or to create lumps on it before painting it. Gesso dries very quickly as does acryllic. Anyway have fun with it. Good luck.

I would buy some different colored cotton balls or similar stuff at a craft store, and some clear thread to string them on, Maybe you should just lump a bunch of them together with glue then have some attached around them with stiff rods or strings in smaller clumps

Staph look a lot like bunches of grapes, if that helps. Beads could be good.
