It's called the War Between the States, or the War of Northern Aggression, where I come from.

It determined that state's rights are subordinate to federal rights and that states that voluntarily joined the union cannot have the freedom to decide to leave it.

It demonstrated the weakness of the South as an agrarian society against the North, which was more industrial, as well as the fact that the North had the Navy and the South did not. The North also had access to an unlimited number of soldiers to replace those killed or wounded, made up of recent immigrants, and the South did not.

An ancillary outcome was the abolition of slavery in the U.S.

It also caused a spiritual and cultural rift in the country that existed long after the war was over due to the punitive and harsh behavior of Northerners following the war. In some places the rift still exists.

This is a brief history of one regiment in the US civil war. Of the 1,500 men, 306 returned, 1,194 didn't. There were many regiments form the various states in the Union and Confederacy. The impact of those that didn't come back would have been huge, on the economy and their families.

It was an economic revolution on a certain level. The Southern economy was in the hands of wealthy landowners. The North was in the hands of millions of family farmers and small manufacturers. The means of industrial production had not become concentrated to a great extent in the North. The large plantation owners were largely overthrown by the civil war.
