Gift cards.

That depends on the giver, the occasion and the present. I think it's totally acceptable, especially when you have asked a friend what they would like, and they say they do not know, to accompany a nice card with a gift card, and a small trinket. Perhaps a nice pen, a CD you personally mixed and burned, a poster, a picture frame, a neat box, etc, would be good to add onto a gift card. Personalizes the gift a little more, while they still get something they really want. Book store gift cards are always best, in my opinion. I always need more money for books, and I don't feel as if I'm wasting it if it's a gift card.

On the other hand, if you can come up with something that is absolutely perfect for a friend, you should go for that. They will appreciate it, and you can just leave it at that. Either way is good to go, but I always love getting gift cards. Opening the perfect gift is nice, too, but I'll take a gift card to Barnes and Noble any day over a giant basket of bath soap and manicure set.

For Christmas, I'm getting my dad a giant basket of cheese, with a gift card somewhere inside. (He likes cheese a lot, so it'll be funny, useful, pleasing, and the gift card will also let him get something he really wants, without me stressing over what to get him. :-D )

Gift Cards.

The way gifts are generally given around here, I would prefer to receive a gift card. That way I can get something I actually like and would use as opposed to something that will either sit for awhile before being donated or regifted.

The best gift of all to receive AND give is a gift which took great thought. When someone thinks about you, who you are, what you like, what your lifestyle is like, and takes the time to find a gift that fits all the criteria that are YOU - THAT is the BEST gift ever. That's the kind I love to give and receive.

I prefer gift cards. Some people just don't have a clue of what to get you and some of the stuff I have gotten I wonder where their head was at when they were shopping. The worst present I got was from a relative. It was a long sleeve shirt folded and wrapped nicely; but when I picked it up to look at it, there was a hole in the back with a note attached by a safety pin stating the item was damaged. I began to wonder if this relative really liked me or not.

gifts or money. A gift that is well thought out is the best thing to get, or even a home made card or item that is really meaningful.
Otherwise I'd rather just get cash or a merry christmas/ happy birthday.
Giftcards just say, I didn't want to give you money cuz it would look like I didn't try, so I'll give you a gift card, because I don't want to put the time in to thinking of something.
A giftcard is also giving someone money, but restricting where they get to use it. -here's 20$ you have to spend in a place of my choosing. - kinda lame.
