y = 2x+7
y = 5x+4
SUBSTITUTE the value for y in the first equation into the second equations and SOLVE for x then SOLVE for y
in one equation and CHECK the values for x and y in the other equation.
y = 2x+7 PUT this into the second equation
y = 5x+4
2x+7 = 5x+4 SUBTRACT 2x from both sides
7 = 5x - 2x + 4 SUBTRACT 4 from both sides
7 - 4 = 5x - 2x
3 = 3x DIVIDE both sides by 3
1 = x
y = 2x+7 SUBSTITUE the value of x = 1 into this equation
y = 2(1) + 7
y = 9
ANSWER x = 1 and y = 9
CHECK in the second equation by SUBSTITUTING the value of x = 1 and y = 9
y = 5x + 4
9 = 5(1) + 4
9 = 9 therefore it checks

Set the two equal to each other, then solve for x...
2x + 7 = 5x +4
2x - 5x = 4 - 7
-3x = -3
so x =1, then plug in 1 for x,
y = 2(1) + 7, and y = 2+7, so y =9

since y=2x+7 AND 5x+4, you just plug one of them in for y. This gets you: 5x+4=2x+7, subtract 2x 3x+4=7, subtract 4 3x=3. Divide by 3 to get that x=1. Now plug this back into the equations, y=2(1)+7 y=2+7 y=9.

2x + 7 = y = 5x + 4
2x + 7 = 5x + 4
3 = 3x
x = 1
y = 2(1) + 7 = 9

This is called Algebra. It is the same as Y=mx+B. Y stand for the total. M stand for the slope or change and X is the time. B stand for how much you add.So if I put your problem into word it would be like this:Everytime you bring your dog to the vet, there is a 2 dollar fee everytime you come there, plus 7 dollar for the doctor to check the dog out, how much is your total cost? so you would put y for the total , and $2 time x, which is every time you go there plus 7 dollar per check up. IF you're learning this through a graph then i could explain that too.

this is the formula y= mx +b
m is the slope or "rise over run"
x is obviously the variable for the x axis
b is the y intercept
for example:
y= 2x+7
if x equals 1 ,y=9
if x equals 2, y=11
etc. . .
Basically m in the formula is how much y increases as x increases.
b in the formula is just where the line crosses the y axis
Hope this helps
