It is certainly possible. The contemporary accounts suggest that when he went ashore to take possession of Newfoundland for the Crown, he saw no people but observed signs of human activity such as snares and fish nets.. But with a small crew he did not wish to tangle with hostile natives so he did not land again. However, only a few years later natives kidnapped by a Portuguese explorer were said to possess a broken sword of Italian manufacture and silver earrings from Venice. These could have come from Cabot, either from an unrecorded encounter or left behind after he and his crew returned to their ship.

Reportedly the British fishing vessels traded with the Indians. Indian remains in Maine, Newfoundland and New Brunswick have revealed iron pots and other implements that could only have come from trade.
