Bigger than you can possibly imagine. The distance to the Moon is equal to 10 times around the world. Did you ever have a car that had 240,000 miles on the odometer? That is the distance to the Moon. And that is the CLOSEST thing in space. The Sun is 400 times more distant that that. And the NEAREST star is 270,000 times as far as the Sun, or 108,000,000 times as far away as the Moon. In Star Trek you see stars going by in the view screen pretty fast. The distance between those stars is 108,000,000 times as much as the distance to the Moon. If the Enterprise were to pass the Earth and Moon at that speed, you would never notice them go past because you would only be close enough to even see them for about a millionth of a second. It would be like leaning out of a car and looking intently down at the road a couple feet directly below your face and trying to see an ant as you drove by at 100 miles per hour.

Space is infinite, but the universe is 15 billion light years or approximately 87,985440,000,000,000,000,000 miles large!

In order to give you an answer, I would have to ask "When?".
"Outer space" is a lot bigger today than it was yesterday. And it will be even larger tomorrow.
