I need more info abot your firend's computer so here are some questions and solutions for you:

1. When you say "play a cd" do you mean s/he is popping in a physical CD into the drive and trying to lsiten to it that way? If so then its possible the sound connector from the drive is not connected to the soundcard....this is common...you would need to open the computer and connect it.

2. By not having the headphones plugged in does he have sound outputting on his speakers (it is connected on the back side of the computer)? Or do you have no sound at all no matter what you do? If no sound at all then have you checked to verify (using the task tray speaker icon to make sure it isn't "muted").

3. Have you verified on the back of the computer that the "green" female connector is where you plug your speakers into?

I know this sounds dumb, but sometimes the problem is very simple. Make sure everything is plugged in. If his headphones have a volume control, make sure it's up. That goes for the volume on the pc as well. Other than that, I hope someone else can give you more advice. Good luck.

P.S. Try using the troubleshooting feature in XP.

My Computer had the same problem, one day the sound didn't work.

For me, it was the integrated sound cards problem. So I just bought a new one.
You can find some cheap ones, and they're easy to install.
It could also be old, or faulty driver (a program that controls the hardware).

Try different methods of trouble shooting, like trying it with different speakers, volumes, programs and such.

The best thing to do is either try to solve it by installing new drivers or better yet, a 99.8% success plan is to by a new sound card. As I said before, they are quite cheap, and easy to install.

BTW try to get a 5.1 or 7.1 sound card.

he might have deleted the sound drivers. also try plugging your headphones in to the back of the computer. if it works then, either the plug is broken in the back or the connecter came loose that hookes into yoru motherboard. also make sure you plug your head phones into the green connector.

if you have a dedicated pci sound card the motherboard connectors and the front pannel connectors wont work

Maybe the sound drive is not installed properly... But better not mess with the computer. If it's new, your friend can call the shop he bought it from and get it fixed. If it's old, your friend should also call a computer shop to get it fixed.

Sound is a vibration, all issues have a vibrational frequency. So, in user-friendly terms, if a lorry is going previous your place, the abode will vibrated. If a singer pitches the voice at a severe adequate frequency it may shatter a tumbler, the molecular chains are no longer sufficiently good adequate to hold at the same time and the resonance will injury the article.

maybe the headphones are messed up already. or the plug on the back of the pc. if he is connecting it on the back of the pc make sure he connects it on the green entry or if not try connecting it on the monitor connect right under the screen.

make sure the sound card is properly plugged in. actually it could be a faulty sound card. the sound in the computer could be turned way down, or on mute.

The cord connected to his speakers could be unplugged or the settings to his soundblaster could be messed with.
