I think it has a lot more to do with how scared we are of everything than how crappy they are at making toys.

It is a psy-op. The media is using this to bolster a perceived need for the govrnment -- an illusion of protection.
Americans were upset and talking heads were actually saying we should shut up because the Chinese could dump there dollar reserves and deflate our economy, which the Chinese govt actually hinted at as well.
So what we have, in a boiled down nutshell, is the side effects of selling out our manufacturing industry to a communist entity -- the fascist state benefits while we complain but continue to consume. So in a way this is terrorism, but a sideways version of it. The establishment is terrorizing us to protect their multinational interests. The government has done nothing and left most feeling naked in the face of a massive entity that supplies almost everything we touch. Think about that, and think about how helpless that makes us. We have no foothold.

As a sociology graduate of University of Texas I can tell you it is industrial espionage. Business owners tied into the media here in America are losing profits to China (the next Japan as far as electronics are concerned) so they make up a phony recall. We have a deadly poison in our water its called fluoride if china wanted to it could use that to stop getting tap water from us (bottled water is tap water). The terrorist thing is made up too.

No, they are producing goods that we did prior to the 1950's. I see it as understandable considering how long they have been secluded from the rest of the world.

Maybe not a terrorist attack, but there are a lot of funny coincidences. It could be possible that they are probing for weakness or inattention. That is sheer speculation, of course, but as far as conspiracy theories go, it's as good as any.

China is booming economically and the US wanted to have it stopped by declaring that its products are poisonous resulting to a worldwide boycott of Chinese products.

In the 80's & 90's we gave them mercury in the vaccines that we sent them...they're just returning the favor with another heavy metal / neurotoxin. Prior to our giving them mercury laden vaccines, the chinese didn't even have a word in their vocabulary for autism, now it's an epidemic. You reap what you sow. Welcome to Pharmaland!
