It all depends on where you are asking the question. Like him or hate him he is a significant figure in broadcasting history. He was the most successful radio talk show host to benefit from the FCC abolishing the Fairness Doctrine.
Furthermore his show (and similar format shows) have been attributed to revitalizing AM radio in the 80's
As far as the man on the street goes there will probably be a couple who know who he was but in the broadcasting industry he will not be forgotten.

Nobody. I don't mean this as an insult even though I'm not one of his fans. Like the person above said, how many conservative commentators from 50 years ago do you know? Has Rush Limbaugh had an effect on history that without him history would be different? No, someone else would have done the same thing. Mainstream history only remembers those who are irreplaceable (made a unique impact on the world or dominant society in the world). Rush Limbaugh is not one of those people.

I think you're asking whether or not Rush Limbaugh will be remember by anyone in 50 years. The answer, almost certainly, is no. He's an entertainer and commedian. Can you name any of the famous political humorists of the 1950's? I assure you that they existed; however, they have been wholly lost to posterity, the same fate Rush will suffer circa 2057....

60 & 70 years ago Father Coughlin was a big influence in radio as an opponent to The New Deal , maybe as popular as Limbaugh is today, and very influential, so to speak. Few people remember him today. Although I'm a big fan of Rush, he'll probably only be a footnote in history.

Fred,
I have one question. Do you know the name of any political commentator from 50 years ago? I don't. None.
My guess is, regardless of which way you vote, or what you think of Rush, his time in the sun is now. History makes room for those that make it, not those that comment on it. He may be a small memory because of his books, but because they are so dependent on time, they will have become irrelevent then as well.
Just my 2 cents.

I would expect to see a monument to him in Cape Girardeau, MO. There's already a memorial to his father there.
I think he may be remembered for the oxycontin scandal, we tend to remember public figures for something they did wrong rather than their accomplishments. That trigger may prompt others to look back at what he did accomplish, and trusting that the information they find is accurate, people in the future may see more of a human figure, with faults like anyone, but good qualities as well.

As someone who was to reach millions of Americans who for generations had been forced to get their news and political commentary from an admittedly biased mass media slanted in favor of the left wing of politics in this country. He will be seen as shining the light of truth on the shenanigans of Bill (and Hillary) Clinton, and creating a wave of political awareness in this country among conservatives. He will be seen as so threatening to his ideological opponents that those in government sought to silence him, and others who followed him, through federal legislation (the "Fairness Doctrine").

2057 Rush Limbaugh will not be known anywhere important or respected on the planet.
If he is known for anything, it will be as an ultra right wing blowhard and a prescription drug abuser. But nothing else.

got news for you.. fifty years from now.. no one will even think of him.. not any more than they do of edward r murrow.. or chet huntley.. they are figures of their times.. they have an impact and then as their generation dissapears.. so will they.. and no one, except for his family will care.. sad maybe but true.. now if he were a history maker such as a Will Rogers.. he would be well remembered and respected.. but someday Rush.. will hush.. and no one will fuss or cuss..

A very, very erudite political commentator, but greatly biased and too all-consumed with his job.
