Most people hire people like themselves, who they feel comfortable with. Many people aren't even aware they're doing it--they just end up with lots of people like themselves working for them, and they don't even give it a second thought. Based on the state of the stock market, obviously many business decisions are made that has nothing to do with money.

Because if they feel that men are superior (or they are misogynists), they think they will get a better "return" on their money.

The same logic can be used to ask why managers hire people who negotiate for more money...why wouldn't they just always hire the guy that's willing to take the lowest offer? It's because they think the other person would do a better job, and so is worth the higher price.

The problem arises when you have people who are sexist and racist...these kind of people will have preconceived notions about women and minorities, and will hire the white man, even though he negotiates for a lot more pay.

I though Warren Farrel had a PhD in Political Science...this is a really dumb question for anyone with any kind of degree to ask, never mind a PhD in Political Science...anyone who's ever worked at Burger King as the night manager can figure this one out.

Putting a single dollar value on someone's worth as a worker is a fallacy. That is the problem with the whole idea. People are not interchangeable commodities.

The business world is forced to make every aspect of employment as completely in-human as possible due to the legal climate. We must distill all work down to simple numbers.

The question is a good one and I think highlights my point.

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

More business is done on the golf course than anywhere else. People in high places don't get jobs because of their work ethic or because of their experience or accomplishments. People in high places are there because of bonds and relationships that helped get them there, keep them there, and helped their 'friends' get there too.

Besides, money is rarely an issue with top executives. It's more about the perks and relationships. An exec hiring an exec would never choose someone just because they were less money. As a matter of fact, at that level, less money would equate to less valuable.

I don't think men are paid more than women unless the man is senior in terms of experience and/or qualifications. In America there is a federal law that governs this area. Its called FLSA, Fair Labor Standard Act.

Anyhoo, hiring a male also comes with the equal opportunity act. :)
