Despite the fact that its cheaper, why do we still import stuff from China if much of it has a high lead content or is otherwise harmful? At this rate, its just going to be recalled anyway. Why not just bring industry back to America?

The world economy has become global and we have other countries manufacture things for us because it is cheaper (often there is less labor regulation and more people who will work long hours at tedious manufacturing jobs). They manufacture things in China for way cheaper than we could manufacture them here. You say we should bring industry back to America, but this is no simple thing. We would have to establish many, many new manufacturing facilities, hire people at minimum wage, provide insurance, limit working hours, and do all kinds of things that would drive costs up compared to what we are paying from other countries.

(By the way, I'm not saying that this is ethically right, just the financial reality of why this happens.)

Pizza Man,

Not ALL products are messed up. Very few products are all messed up.

Your computer would not operate if it wasn't for Chinese parts
Nor would your car
Nor could you buy clothes at a reasonable cost
Even the high priced USA made clothes, more then likely the cloth came from overseas, maybe from China.

When you factor in the following:
China has a labor force of over 800 million
They have unemployment as well as underemployment problems
That will keep wages and cost of living low for decades
China also has a very stable society and government.
Plus an abundance of natural resources

Therefore, businesses go to China because its considered a good business climate.

The best bellwether of how healthy a country is, is not through our government or newspapers, but rather through industry and how much is invested in foreign countries. China is a very safe country to invest in, that is why billions are being invested.

As far as bringing jobs back to the USA, the first order of business is to reduce wages, the second order is bring down the cost of benefits, the third is to bring down the cost of living. Are you willing to suffer through that?

Peace

Jim

Chinese products are imported because of trade agreements and indebtedness forcing America to receive the products.

It's not ''Despite the fact that its cheaper, why do ...''

that is the only reason.

Why do we buy stuff from China if its all messed up? Why do you expect the Government to solve all of your problems?

Because the capitalists in our government don't care as long as they get richer!
