I heard they stopped the trade routes that brought goods to Europe? Is this true?

Any other information would be great thanks !

In 1453 they captured Constantinople (modern Istanbul) which ended the Byzantine empire and shut off trade routes through that city. This inspired the Portugese to try to go south and east around Africa to get to "the Indies" and Columbus to sail west. The Italian cities, especially Genoa and Venice, began an economic decline as their trade with Asia via the Mediterranean and Constantinople dried up. Poverty also threatened the various islands of the Mediterranean such as Malta, Crete, and Rhodes.

The fact that the Ottomans made trade difficult to Asia and Europe and back caused the Europeans to find a way to Asia. This blockade must have at least lasted until 1492, or else Columbus would have been without a job.
