I prefer a FLAT tax--on EVERYTHING--same rate for EVERYBODY, NO EXEMPTIONS, NO DEDUCTIONS. The rich will not stop buying just to avoid taxes completely, and will thus pay the most because they can afford to buy the most. This way we tax CONSUMPTION, not income.

wow that actually sounds like a really good idea. i would love the idea of taxing on consumption not income. I think 7-9% is not realistic though, because NJ already has 7%, along with the highest property taxes in the country plus income tax plus everything else.

There is a problem with the plan though. Income tax is collected federally and at the state and sales tax is only collected at the state. Are you talking about just getting rid of state income tax and raising the sales tax? That would work, but if not you would have to establish a federal sales tax which would be a mess.
I think this plan would work great at the state level. Probably something like 13-14%, but no property taxes or income tax. At the federal level I think it is too complicated and too radical though. That is too much change for our country to stomach

The federal government spends 20% of GDP so any sales tax would have to raise that amount and 7-9% isn't going to do it. The estimate is that a 23% to 30% tax would enough, but only if it were applied to everything you spend, including many thing you are not use to paying sales tax on, like new homes, rent, utility bills, insurance, etc. You would still have to pay state taxes.

I think I may know what you're talking about but, I can't remember what it's called. Free tax or something or other. I have a brother that is into that. Has something to do with paying all your taxes when you do your shopping or whatever. I still don't see how that would help anything out as I only pay sales tax anyway.
