Seriously---
>Congress would refuse to authorize sustained military action against Iran.
>One collateral effect wduld be to push the moderate GOP in Congress into supporting a cutoff of funding/mandatory timetalle for withdrawal from Iraq.
>An impeachement effort might be mounted. But, given the appreciable number of right wing Senators still in the Senate, its doubtful it would succeed. That, however, would depend on a number of factors; its not at all certain one way or the other
Broader consequences:
>The Democrats would not only win the Pesidency, but their control of the House and Senate would strengthen dramatically.
>The facade of the military being able to meet recuritmet goals would vanish--recruitment would drop drastically (keep in mind it is a facade--the army is meeting its goals only by paying large bonuses, giving citizenship to immigrants in exchange for serving-AND lowering standards).
Long term consequences--to take the right-wing agenda to the extreme of atacking still another country woul,in the long run, result in the complete and permanant discrediting and marginalization of the so-called "neoconservative/religious right"--much as the vicious brutality blacks were subjected to in the Civil Rights era permanantly discredited white supremecists.

The initial public reaction would be to rally around the flag so the congress will fall into line. Only after the repercussions started to effect people would the public turn against the attack. We will have $5+ dollar a gallon gas, the county will be in recession, and reports that Iran's nuclear program is still intact will be leaked from high government sources. By then Bush will be gone, the Democrats will blame the Republicans and the Republicans will point out that the Democrats were in control of congress and could have cut off fund to the troops in they wanted to stop it.

Bush is already the most unpopular president since they started taking numbers. He couldn't go lower in the polls, and he really has nothing to lose there anyway. I doubt he would be impeached, or that funds could be cut off, it seems like if the Democrats could do that they would have already.
I think it would hurt the Republicans' chances of keeping the White House in '08, but they don't have much chance anyway.
There's a theory I've heard kicked around that Bush doesn't really even plan to bomb Iran. He and his administration are just saber-rattling so that if Iran ever -does- announce it has nuclear weapons, Republicans will be able to say 'I told you so'.
As it is, I believe the Iranians have satisfied the UN that they are only trying to make fuel for their nuclear reactors. Reactors which WE SOLD THEM! Not that they couldn't eventually use this technology to make bombs, but like all of Bush's justifications for war so far, this has nothing to do with his real reasons for wanting to bomb them.

I don't believe it will happen.
I believe Iran will be an Issue our next president will have to deal with.
on the off chance something does happen, congress has proven just how useless they are after the last election(the one that was supposed to be a vote for change) we see how well that worked out.

It is only a matter of time. Whether it is sanctioned by President George Bush or President John McCain, or (after McCain) President Hillary Clinton, it is; anybody's guess.

To the poster who claims that the US provided Iran with nuclear reactors...I was under the impression that Iran's nuclear reactors are of Russian origin.

Flimsy lack of evidence? Even the UN says that Iran can have a nuclear weapon within 3 years. How is that a lack of evidence?
Stop asking questions based on emotion and start asking them based on the FACTS.
