Blu-Ray and HD DVD are essentially DVDs in high definition. Blu-Ray and HD DVD are rendered in 1080p resolution, which is 6 times the resolution of regular DVD, and actually is a higher resolution than television that is currently broadcasted in HD (which is either 720p/1080i).
To get the full effect of Blu-Ray and HD DVD, you will have to purchase a 1080p HD television. If you have seen this display in a store, it is actually quite impressive. But also very expensive.
The one shortcoming of Blu-Ray and HD DVD is that most studios have aligned with one of the formats. For instance, Sony is available on Blu-Ray.

Blue ray and HDdvd are two formats that offer better sound and picture quality, the highest resolution you can get (at the moment) from a dvd it's been said that you could see the pores on a persons skin when you watch a dvd in Blue ray or HD. regular dvds don't have this capability. There's more to be said about this but that's the bottom line.

Not sure. All I know is Blue Ray appears to be smaller than dvds. perhaps you have to have a blue-ray player to watch blue-ray movies

Blue Ray is supposed to be able to give a high definition video.Also is able to hold more information.And must have Blue Ray player to watch Blue Ray movies.

They are different technologies for recording HD on a disc. I would not by a player of either one until the industry standard is set. This is the same thing as the VHS and Betamax battle way back when. How many people ended up with Sony Betamax players after VHS won the war?

blu-ray is high definition.
dvd is not
blu-ray disks can carry up to 50gb of data, wheras a dvd can carry around 8.7gb
