Draw a picture. If a square of side x is cut from each corner of the 18 by 20 sheet, the box will have a width of (18-2x), a length of (20-2x), and a height of x. So the volume will be

x(18-2x)(20-2x)

which, a bit further factored, is

4x(9-x)(10-x)

Expand that out to get the polynomial model. Note that 0 ≤ x ≤ 9

If the volume is to be 224, set your polynomial equal to 224.
