If they are the same type of yarn, but different colors, you can keep knitting (if you like the color scheme). If you want to join new yarn, you can do so using the Russian join method. Here are some links to show you how:

These methods are helpful if they are the same type of yarn and/or different color.
Or you can leave a few inches of the old yarn hanging, start knitting with the new yarn (also leave a few inches hanging). Just weave in the ends like this:

Never join two balls/skeins of yarn by knotting it. If the knot comes apart, so will your scarf.

ok, so ideally you opt for a trend before you purchase the yarn, so that you recognize the way a lot yarn you want to purchase. notwithstanding in authentic existence this does no longer continuously take position. you're surfing an internet yarn keep, you're fondling wools in a yarn save and before you recognize the position you're, the yarn fumes have were given you and also you've succumbed to what _must_ be sufficient for a sweater. except that once you get it living house and start up looking on line at kinds, it really is probable purely *basically* sufficient, and probably no longer even that. If a threat, contact the position you got the unique yarn from, telling them both the colour and the dye-lot (this can be printed on the label someplace) and ask in the journey that they could enable you've any extra. in the journey that they could't, you could continuously attempt asking round on Ravelry (an options-blowing on line source for knitters and crocheters) and see if someone has any mendacity round of their stash that they are chuffed to commerce with you. If that doesn't paintings, attempt operating some stripes into your mission. (this can take somewhat planning - do not basically launch into it, and be sure that the hot color knits as a lot as a similar gauge because the unique yarn.) notwithstanding, in case you locate that you do not imagine you've sufficient as you're getting in direction of the end of the mission, and the yarn is belongings you inherited out of your mom, and it changed into discontinued years in the past, and also you've were given no longer something acceptable to placed with it, basically knit speedier - who's familiar with, you will get to the end of the mission before it notices. (Hmm - that is precisely the position i'm at with my present day knitting mission...)

be brave, and fake it. use another color, and pretend that you meant to do it. use a slightly different pattern, as though the different colors were used to hi light the different patterns, (stockinette vs seed stitch, or whatever) people will accept the pattern and color changes, as long as you act as though you did that as an artistic choice. NEVER APOLOGIZE!

Color blocks! Do all one color, then do the next color on each end, the same amount on each end so it looks like you did it on purpose.
