what does fear have to do with "to respect, to honor," the current meaning of revere? [why would ancient people fear kings?]

Vereor, veriri - the most commonly used meanings are 'revere, respect'. The word may also be used for 'fear, dread'. 'Revere' is based on the more common usage.

Revere means to regard with awe. It's more than just respect, you need that idea of fear in there.
