I grew up in a smaller town in Texas (about 25,000 people) and went to high school with the bassist and vocalist for Deep Blue Something (did Breakfast at Tiffany's). Now living in Portland, OR, there's a whole crap load of bands that come from here or live here currently (Quarterflash, The Shins, The Decemberists for example) although I can't stand the vast majority of them. I really liked I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House, an old style country sound combining Johnny Cash, David Allen Coe, and Hank Williams Jr., but they broke up.

Sniff...

The best thing to come from any of these towns is Richard Linkletter ( director of Slacker, School of Rock, Dazed & Confused) from the small TX town. He rules.

Edit: MachPen, hell yeah, Marty Robbins should count

o o o O (Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, I fell in love with a Mexican girl)

All of the following artists are from my home town of Toronto, or near by. I found a website with tons of Canadian artists like DOA, Paul Anka, The Guess Who, K.D Lang, Oscar Peterson, April Wine, Chilliwack, Trooper, Bobby Curtola, Voi Vod, Hank Snow, Mahogany Rush, Leonard Cohen, Loverboy, BTO, etc, and it took quite awhile to isolate, copy and paste this tiny portion of the Toronto and area bands.

My favorite would be Rush!

Guy Lombardo (big band leader)
Triumph
Lighthouse
Crowbar
Moxy
The Diodes

The only decent one was The Belltower, a shoegaze band

but it kinda started in NYC or UK, but Jody Porter moved the band back to his hometown for about a year (Charleston)

the most interesting thing going on here now is the New Music Collective, a sort of avant garde thing with a few side projects (like the Kopaja Quintet)

crappiest one is Hootie (technically they started in Columbia)

I've never really cared for the dominant sound of Charleston bands, i don't know how to label it

My hometown is Franklin, Tennessee, where Paramore is from. I've also lived in Bakersfield, California, which is Korn and Buck Owen's hometown. Right now I'm in L.A., lots of bands are from here, like Silversun Pickups, Rilo Kiley, System Of A Down, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shiny Toy Guns, etc.

Well I live in a town of 200 people, named Black Oak, Arkansas. There was a Southern Rock Band by the same name from here back in the early 70's. The only song I know is "Jim Dandy to the Rescue- Go Jim Dandy- "
Jim Dandy- lead singer real name Jim Mangrum grew up here. They weren't well known- I really don't know- before my time. Oh, the author John Grisham is from here also.

I went to middle school with Natalie Portman. She was a grade above me. I don't ever remember seeing her but then again she wasn't that famous yet. She had only done the movie The Professional at the time. I remember one of my teachers mentioning that a girl in the school was going to be in a movie though. Once the first Star Wars movie came out, I heard something about her going to a Long Island school, so I grabbed my old middle school year book and sure enough, there she was. This was in Syosset, Long Island NY

Third Eye Blind
Two Gallants
Beulah
The SeaHags
The Beau Brummels
The Dead Kennedys
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
A slew of 60s and 70s "hippie" bands, most of whom are kinda boring

Lots of others, I'm sure. My favorite being Third Eye Blind (shut-up! They're actually really good!), with maybe Two Gallants or The SeaHags being second.
