My midwife gave me an exam the other day at 36 wk check-up and said the cervix was still pretty closed and i was (-3) and long. What does this mean?

Basically, your cervix is not yet ripe and ready for labor, which is not unusual at 36 weeks.

A closed cervix is not at all dilated. Station refers to the position of the baby's head in your pelvis. A negative number means his head is higher than your pelvic bone.

In the coming weeks, you might start to see some changes at your regular check-ups with possible dilating and effacement which happens gradually for first-time mothers.

It means your cervix is not really effaced, or thinned out any (she said it's long). Closed means your cervix is not dilating (opening) yet. And -3 is the "station" of the baby's head in relation to two bony prominences in the pelvis. It is a measurement of how low or high the head is. The bony landmarks are considered a 0 station. Higher than that and the numbers go negative, in centimeters, lower than that and the numbers are positive, in centimeters. -3 means the baby is very high in the pelvis. If you were +4 you'd have been laboring, the cervix would be dilated, and you'd be close to crowning.

What this all means is that your cervix is unripe and labor is not imminently near. Which is totally normal for 36 weeks.

When you get closer to delivering your baby descends into the pelvis. They measure this in "stations"..0 means right at the opening. As you get closer your your cervix opening will also shorten in preparation to open all the way to 10cm. So -3, closed and long means that the baby is still high in your pelvis and your cervix is not beginning to prepare for birth yet. That is ok it just means you won't deliver soon. These things can change quickly though, some people dilate weeks ahead or some (like me) not until labour.

-3 means the station your at. That would be head down with some mobility. I wouldn't expect your cervix to be open for another 2- 4 weeks. Being long is no issue. Sounds healthy to me!! Good luck.

It means you have a bit more to go, probably wont have your baby until your due date. No worries though.
