RIGHT NOW my balloon molly is swimming vertically, bobbing up and down, and is isolated in a container separate from my other fish. she/he looks stressed and i'm assuming she/he might die really soon, however she/he is very fat and possibly pregnant. does anyone know what is happening? or what i can do?

Is your molly swimming with her head toward the gravel? If that's what you mean by her swimming vertically, she probably has a problem with her swim bladder. This is usually caused by problems with their diet (usually overfeeding with dry food), poor water quality, or an internal infection. Some fish with shortened rounded bodies like fancy goldfish seem to be more prone to this than types with elongated bodies, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what your balloon molly has.

If you haven't done any water changes recently, that might be a good start (do a 25% change). Also, if she's still eating, try feeding her a bit of a cooked green pea with the skin removed. If she's overeaten and the food has compacted/constipated her, and it's fermenting, that will act as fiber and help her pass it (a little fiber in their diet is a good idea - I give mine some veggies every week for prevention).

If this doesn't seem to have any effect after about 2 days, treat her with a broad spectrum antibiotic.

To tell the gender, look at the anal fin - the one on the bottom near the tail - and comapere it to the photos of these platys (the male is the one in the top photo): http://www.drta-archiv.de/Fische/Zahnkarpfen/Platys/images/platys.jpg

Swimming Balloon

I'm sorry, but she is clearly dying. If she was giving birth, then she would be acting normal, only a little "edgy". However, she wouldn't be swimming vertically, and that is a sure sign of death. Don't worry, she is just a fish, and you could always get another one. By the way, this is how you tell male and female balloon mollies apart:

Males have a long, pointy fin by their butt, called a gonopodium.

Females have a triangular shaped fin by their butt, and usually they are fatter then males, but the size is harder to tell when it comes to balloon mollies.

Hope this helps!
Good luck!

They shouldn't, inspite of the certainty that giving start is stressful, so if circumstances interior the tank at the instant are not maximum appropriate, it rather is the likely time that they are going to die. they could provide start to varied broods of fry, approx each and each month, for various years. in the event that they at the instant are not then something is incorrect. Tank length and/or water high quality themes? Ian
